When our client approached us with the puzzle of achieving the desired range of height and tilt adjustment using their standard electric actuators on a new design of hospital bed, we solved the problem with the aid of our CAD software. By modelling the mechanism and then moving it through its entire range of motion in both degrees of freedom, we were able to optimise the motion given the desired speeds of motion, maximum actuator loads and the packaging space available. With the parametric capability of the software we were able to modify the design easily and converge rapidly to the optimum mechanism design.
